COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course teaches the scientific background and technical aspects which are important in the development of basic dosage forms. This course will focus on physic-chemical foundation of various dosage forms and drug delivery system. Discussion will include various preformulation factors like rheology, viscosity and elasticity. Some basic physicochemical processes which have extensive application in the development of basic dosage forms will also be discussed. All these preformulation aspects helps pharmacist to make rational decisions on scientific basis concerning the art and technology of pharmaceutical products.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)

CLO: 1. To discuss principles, theory and experiments used in physical pharmacy with special focus on physicochemical properties.
CLO: 2. To perform skillfully laboratory experiments related to physical pharmacy by operating different laboratory equipments and execute relevant calculations, graphical presentations and results.
CLO: 3. To analyze given data, graphs and calculations using basic principles of physical pharmacy.

COURSE CONTENTS

NOTE: Practicals of the subject shall be designed from time to time on the basis of the above mentioned theoretical topics and availability of the facilities e.g.

  1. Partition-coefficient, surface tension, and viscosity.
  2. Experiments to demonstrate some of physico-chemical processes like simple distillation, steam distillation, crystallization, and dialysis
