COURSE OBJECTIVES

The focus of this course is to develop scientific background and technical aspects important in dosage form design, basic dosage forms and their therapeutic applications. This course will also focus on physicochemical foundation of various dosage forms.

CLO: 1. To explain different pharmaceutical dosage forms, principles and steps for preparation, illustrate their components, their special pharmaceutical needs and considerations respective to specified dosage form
CLO: 2. To solve some important pharmaceutical calculations used routinely in laboratory, hospital or industrial settings
CLO: 3. To integrate basic knowledge of dosage form science to develop different formulations

    • Some Fundamentals of Measurements and Calculations. The Metric System. The Common Systems. Conversions. Calculation of Doses. Percentage calculations, Reducing and Enlarging Formulas. Weights and Volumes of Liquids. HLB Values. Industrial Calculations. Calculations involving parenteral admixtures. Some calculations involving Hydrogen-ion concentration. Calculations involving isotonic, electrolyte and buffer solutions.

  5. ORAL SOLUTIONS, SYRUPS, ELIXIRS AND SPIRITS
    • their preparation, dry mixtures for solution, oral rehydrates solutions, oral colonic lavage solution. Syrup components and preparation of syrups. Elixirs_ Preparation of elixirs, Medicated and non-Medicated elixirs. Spirits, Preparation of Spirits
