Book Reading: The ‘Coming Back’ Trend in University Students

When it comes to book reading, many university students find it difficult to make time. For sure, as a university student, you will fill your schedule with classes and extracurricular activities. Hence, leaving little time for reading. However, reading books can help you explore innovative ideas and consider different perspectives. This is how this activity appears as the ‘coming back’ trend in university students. Let’s find out the top reasons for this!

What Makes Book Reading Important?

Some studies have shown that book reading can lead to feelings of enjoyment, relaxation, and escapism. Even better, reading also helps you feel more empathy and increases your social capital. Hence, despite the hectic schedules you might have while studying at a top university, like MAJU (Muhammad Ali Jinnah University), you need to make enough time to read.

To get a better understanding, let’s find out why it is important to read books while you are studying at university.

Reading Helps You Gain Self-Esteem

This might be the most important reason we should note. When you develop reading skills, it will lead to more assurance in how you speak and write. Even better, it will give you the confidence of an expanded knowledge base.

For example, if you read about diverse people, distant places, and historical events, you will become more creative and open. Also, if you read a lot, you can get more confidence in answering some questions during your study.

Builds Your Critical and Analytical Thinking Skills

Imagine you are reading a book that requires you to solve a mystery. Then, you manage to solve the mystery in your head before the books reveal it. Well, this is a simple example of how book reading helps you build better critical and analytical skills. After all, remember that critical thinking is one of the skills you must learn during your university life.

Improves Your Concentration

Book reading activity helps you develop higher levels of focus and concentration. Most importantly, it will drive you to sort things out in your own mind – including topics that might not be familiar to you. Accordingly, this type of concentration on one topic will lead to better focus even after you put the book down.

Learns Expanded Vocabulary

Sometimes, we all search for just the right word to express what we are trying to say, right? Well, you will do that less when you read books daily. How?

Book reading helps you learn a larger vocabulary. As a student, those words learn in a book will eventually make your way into your speech.

Moreover, reading can help you become a good speller. This way, you can conduct yourself professionally. After all, emails or memos written with spelling mistakes will look unprofessional. By making reading your daily habit, you will find some words repeatedly. Hence, your spelling patterns will be ingrained by familiarity.

What Makes Book Reading Important?

Helps in Your Writing

Do you know that the best writers are avid readers?

When you read so many compelling stories, you know what it takes to craft one. To become a storyteller, book reading is an essential practice. Yes, by reading, you can develop your writing skills and ability to communicate effectively.

In addition, reading can expose you to a variety of writing styles and techniques that you can apply in your own work. You can then design your work on what you read, set the goals, and strive to improve your practices.

Brings a Sense of Discovery

Without you realising it, book reading can increase your knowledge of the world. Furthermore, excellent reading skills translate into the ability to learn from what you read. The more you read, the more curious you will become. Eventually, this will spark a cycle of research, inquiry, and discovery.

One thing you must note is that discoveries made by book reading can point you in new directions. As a result, you can expand your education or enhance your everyday life.

Reading Develops Stronger Memory Skills

Now let’s remember the last time you read a book. You might remember a group of characters, the setting, and past actions of the book you read. Yes, it is because book reading helps to strengthen memory retention skills. Hence, it will be a powerful tool to help you do well during your study. Eventually, this can help you accomplish a degree to navigate your future.

What Genre of Books Should You Read as a University Student?

To prepare yourself for getting your university degree, you should read books that focus on personal development and open-mindedness. These books will help you mature on a physical, personal, and psychological level while achieving your goals. Of course, this does not mean that you cannot read other genres. For example, it will be interesting if you read a fiction novel during your free time.

Wrapping Up

Indeed, book reading can help you explore innovative ideas and consider different perspectives. This is how this activity appears as the ‘coming back’ trend in university students. Moreover, there are some beneficial aspects that make reading books important, such as reading helps you gain self-esteem, improves your concentration, and more. Hence, as a university student, you surely should make enough time to read some books!
